History of Our Federation

Bangladesh Swimming Federation (BSF) initiated the successful formation of the Asian Continental Swimming Federation by circulating a notice to all Swimming Federations/Associations in Asia in 1978.

Accordingly two meetings of the Asian Swimming Federations/Associations were held in YMCA during the Asian Games 1978 in Bangkok. An ad hoc constitution was approved in the second meeting with the name of the continental Federation as “Asian Amateur Swimming Federation” (AASF).

Following the ad hoc constitution Dr. K. M.S. Aziz was elected as the Secretary General of AASF. As per the ad hoc constitution the President of AASF was to be decided by the country hosting the Asian Swimming Championships.

Bangladesh hosted the First Asian Swimming Championships in 1980 and the President of Bangladesh Swimming Federation offered the position of President AASF to another Asian country.

The Executive Committee of BSF then selected Mr. Edilberto Bonus, the President of the Philippines Swimming Association to be the President AASF. The first congress of AASF, where 22 Asian National Federations were present, was hosted by BSF in Hotel Purbani, Dhaka in 1980 and the constitution of AASF was approved in this congress.

The General Secretary and subsequently the Vice President of BSF served AASF for more than 21 years as the Secretary General AASF putting the AASF firmly in place among the continental Swimming Federations of the world.
